[Update: Durbin has contacted me explaining he is not in a position to debate at this time for health reasons that he is going through. So keep him in your prayers to bring his health back. I told him that we are happy to keep the invitation open in the future when he feels he is ready.]
Over a month ago, Eschatos Ministries contacted pastor Jeff Durbin of Apologia Church and Apologia Studios to invite him for an eschatology debate with Dr. Brock Hollett on the topic of preterism (Durbin also holds to the related view postmillennialism).
Dr. Brock Hollett is an ex-preterist, now futurist, who has authored Debunking Preterism: How Over-Realized Eschatology Misses the Not Yet of Bible Prophecy.
Eschatos Ministries sought to sponsor a debate that stems from a desire to see meaningful interaction between preterist and futurist theology. The following debate thesis was proposed:
THE PAROUSIA EVENT IN MATTHEW 24:30 IS FUTURE
Dr. Hollett would take the affirmative, while pastor Durbin would take the denial. The debate would have been in early 2020.
There were four reasons we contacted pastor Durbin: (1) I respect a lot of what Durbin does, particularly his passion for street evangelism and proclaiming the gospel at abortion clinics, (2) Durbin’s preterist/postmillennial theology of the kingdom is foundational to his theology, (3) it is not only foundational to his theology, but he talks about it and teaches on it quite frequently, (4) finally, Durbin is known for debating and engaging theological topics, even his ministry motto is: “Christian Media that Pulls No Punches.”
