In the video below, Dr. Michael Heiser thinks that you cannot know anything about eschatology. And if you do, you are arrogant for thinking so. There is no nuance in his statement. Listening to him, I get the impression that you cannot at the same time understand eschatology while recognizing that you do not have all the answers.
Further, he is throwing out the baby with the bathwater. He grew up in an independent fundamental Baptist background (as I have done) that were staunch pretribulational, which has left a bad taste in his mouth.
Regardless of the fact that Jesus, Paul, and the book of Revelation warn that not only can you understand but you better understand.
The only thing that Dr. Heiser thinks that we can know about eschatology is that we cannot know.
In the short video, he utters many of the popular slogans that I have refuted in my article “Why Biblical Prophecy Matters.”
It is disappointing since I respect his scholarship, but I am afraid that his controlling principle for his conclusions are not found in the text of Scripture, but rather seems to be factors outside of it—dismissing eschatology is a trend for many pastors today.
That being said, I would imagine he would view prewrath as much more sober that the pretribulationism. He sat in on one of my prewrath talks at a conference about ten years ago or so and I recall afterwards he had some favorable remarks, not that he is prewrath or premillennial. So I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt, but videos such as this lacks qualifications by lumping all of those who study biblical prophecy as wasting time.
