Through talking to many believers in recent months, most have revealed that they don’t study eschatology—and even some have admitted they “avoid” it on purpose.
I have concluded, in my judgment, a most important reason to study eschatology.
It is not a secret or some special insight that I have. I believe it is backed up by many biblical passages. It is quite obvious, in fact, that many of us assume it. But it is enormously important.
It is this: Focusing—not mere occasional reflection—on the second coming is an antidote to being preoccupied, distracted, and caught up with the attachments and worries of the daily grind. This is exactly what Jesus warned of in his Olivet Discourse with his many illustrations.
I fear that the vast majority of the evangelical church today is, at least in America, caught up with their diurnal rat race. They have lost perspective that this life is a vapor and eternity will be here soon.
While a believer’s posture toward the second coming of Christ is not the only barometer to one’s spiritual daily vigilance from the wiles of the devil, it is one of the most important touchstones, in my judgment.
In other words, I fear for the church in America. There is a rude day of awakening approaching. May those who read this renew themselves in the Word and begin to go to war on their knees.
Focus your studies on the coming deliverer, judge, and king. It will prepare you from what (who) is approaching in the days ahead.
