Dr. Kurschner explained that fire is the basic element of God’s wrath, which is explicitly expressed in the first three trumpet judgments in the book of Revelation.
While the ungodly will suffer eternal fire in hell, they will also experience the fiery wrath of God in the earthly judgments of the trumpets, which Paul points to in 2 Thessalonians 1:8: “With flaming fire he will mete out punishment on those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus.” This Thessalonian passage points to the first three trumpet judgments in Revelation.
It was also explained that the Old Testament prophets description included fire as a key element of the eschatological day of the Lord’s wrath. Jesus and Peter are consistent as well that fire will begin and continue during the day of the Lord’s wrath.
