I am sure all of you are aware by now of the meteor shower that took place Friday morning in central Russia. Its effect caused a lot of damage and injuries to buildings and people. What caught my attention are the headlines that are mentioning the reactions of “panic” and “havoc.” This immediately made me recall the celestial disturbance event in Scripture that will harbinger the day of the Lord’s wrath in the sixth seal and the panicked reactions. One of the elements within the celestial disturbance cluster most likely describes meteor showers: “and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind.” What happened in central Russia Friday will be exponentially and globally felt at the sixth seal.
Notice the panicked response that the wicked will exhibit:
Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red; and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind. The sky was split apart like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved from its place. Then the kings of the earth, the very important people, the generals, the rich, the powerful, and everyone, slave and free, hid themselves in the caves and among the rocks of the mountains. They said to the mountains and to the rocks, “Fall on us and hide us from the face of the one who is seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb, because the great day of their wrath has come, and who is able to withstand it?” (Rev 6:12–17; cf. Matt 24:29; Luke 21:25–28).
Even though the recent meteor shower is not the celestial disturbance event in Scripture, since it will occur within a cluster of events, it should remind us that the Lord is holy and he will one day judge this wicked world through his creation.
It should also remind us of our finitude as creatures in God’s Creation. Today is the day of Salvation.
